Yet another less than optimistic political caricature based on the sad state of our economy, this one indicates that both sides have been making it worse; metaphorically pouring fuel on the fire. It uses symbolism to get it's point across. The donkey, elephant, Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty are all well known and easily recognizable symbols. For the rest, there are labels. Limitted use of color helps with emphasis, and to move the viewers eyes around the drawing. Important words are in all-caps. Loose, sketchy drawing style that seems to be pretty typical of political cartoons these days- perhaps it makes them seem more friendly to the viewer, or helps give a lighter feel to serious subject matters.
This is a very simple cartoon with an important message. It is simple enough so everyone can access it and understand it at a quick glance. At the same time it is detailed enough like you said to have identifiable characteristics. I like how it is not criticizing any party in particular, but just makes a generalization of how bad things are right now and how we seem to be incapable of fixing anything. I like the comedy and the allegory that is in this cartoon.
ReplyDeleteThis illustration is a fine example of how our country is becoming more and more greedy and how the government is going to the dogs. Yes no party is being prosecuted, but it is the government none- the -less that is to blame. This comedic cartoon is not funny when our country is the one at stake of its own destruction!
ReplyDeleteIt is a very cute cartoon in a way. I agree luzcarmen! It is a very serious and frightening subject. And we should pay attention to it and take it seriously. But I wonder how much we can really do in the end. I find that as an individual I feel very helpless in political matters. If I continually dwell on the state of the country and the future, I think I will get very depressed. Perhaps the only way to go on with one's life when they know everything is crumbling around them is to make the subject lighter than it really is. To view tragedy with a little humor, otherwise I think that we will give up. Where there's laughter there's life, "and where there's life there's hope".
